Trials Photographs Database
Introduction
The Trials Photographs Database is the second of my two ridiculously ambitious research projects - the other being the Trials Sections Database. The initial intention of the Trials Photographs Database was to record all the historic trials-related photographs in my possession and to list, complete, and correct where necessary, the captioning of all trials-related photographs published in the major Reference sources, particularly the Books. It has since been expanded to cover photographs available online, such as those published on the Austin Harris website.
If anyone is interested in a particular unpublished photograph, please Contact Me and I'll make this a priority item for scanning and publication. If you have any photographs that you think may be of interest, please refer to the Contributions page.
Full listing information
- Basic information : Date, Club, Trial, Car, Driver, Competition number, is self-explanatory and, where applicable, has been checked with Cowbourne. If the full date is shown, and the relevant trial is listed in Cowbourne, then I am 99% certain that the information is correct. In a few cases Cowbourne information has been used to correct information provided by others, sometimes even handwritten notes on the back of the photograph. A typical example would be where all the information, except the year, is correct, and Cowbourne provides the correct year.
- Section : I've now revised the way in which this is displayed, to provide more information and to help in the identification of "unknown" sections:
- Section name (with no additions) : I'm 99% certain that this is correct. In some cases the section name has been taken from handwritten notes on the back of the photograph, or captions in photo albums or books. I generally assume that these are correct unless there is strong evidence to the contrary.
- Section name + * : The same photograph from two, or more, different sources.
- Section name + ? : Either my "best guess" or where there is some question over the information provided by others.
- Section name + ?? : An "inspired guess", generally by a process of deduction from my knowledge of other sections used for a particular trial.
- (Name in brackets) : Not an Observed Section, and generally self-explanatory.
- (Unknown) : Means what it says.
- + # : Generally applied to "?" or "(Unknown)", the # symbol means that there are two or more photographs obviously taken at the same place, which are then grouped, i.e. "#1" are all at one place, "#2" are all at another place, etc.
- Web : Shows when the photograph is available for public viewing online. All photographs with a listing in this column are also included in the Online listing information printout. Key:
- AH : Available on the Austin Harris website.
- WS : Available on this website.
- Source and reference : Primarily for my own use, these two columns list the book and page where relevant, or the original source of the photographs in my possession. Most of these are the self-explanatory listing of named individuals but one entry deserves further explanation:
- JESJ CD : This a CD of photographs scanned from the album of JES (Jesus) Jones, the famous 1930s MG works trials driver, and provided to me by Mike Dalby.
Online listing information
- The online listing includes only those photographs which are available online, together with live hyperlinks directly to the photographs or the web pages on which they are displayed.
